Establishing Expectations: Blog 1

Often courses in high school, especially those having to deal with standardized testing, focus on specific aspects and "formulas" which are needed to be taught in relation to the testing. As a result, I feel that the English courses I have taken so far have not fully prepared me for the course this summer. They have not provided me with the critical analysis of documents necessary for this course or encouraged a "conversation" between the text where the reader goes beyond the conventional writing and into how it makes them feel and their opinions/reactions to it. Despite this, I believe that I have been provided with the necessary basics in crafting well-written essays and so I expect to refine those skills even further and hopefully expand upon how I read and interpret literature as well. I hope this new-found knowledge will, likewise, help me in the aspect of research papers because, while I am able to find documents and evidence to support my claim, I often have trouble intertwining my thoughts from the authors and extracting new ideas from the text. All in all, I am looking forward to a great two weeks!

  1. I agree with you. In many cases, mine included, high school level class do not fully prepare you for the course you will take in college. But I feel this course will do well for the both of us. These two well will surly be an adequate stepping stone and leave you feeling more ready for future English classes.

  2. I know what you mean! I feel like my high school only taught us the fast way of just getting our diploma. They never really focused on our college readiness, unless one was enrolled in an advanced placement course, honors, or dual credit. We were simply taught to point out the obvious in the text and agree with it. I am similarly excited about the depths this course will teach us to go. I hope to become a true critical, independent thinker at the end of this course.

  4. I how I feel! My school no one has really prepared me for this type of work. We would have weeks to just get the first draft done and here we have a night to get it done. That why my first school day here was hard. The work load was crazy and I thought I couldn't handle it, because my high school has never had to teach me time management. This program has shown me that just because you have a good GPA doesn't mean you actually know how to do things correctly. I'm very excited about these two weeks to show me the right thing to do not just the fast way!
