Establishing Expectations 7/7/15

Reading, writing and research have always come pretty easily to me. Still, my skills extend more towards writing and research than critical reading. If the text is interesting and understandable then I usually won’t have an issue. However, writings such as Shakespeare can take me a while to decipher. Nevertheless, I took this class to expand my writing abilities. I was also curious to learn what is expected when writing in college and how it differs from high school.
I feel confident in my writing when given time to develop and edit it. The thing I struggled with most when taking AP English, was the timed essays that were due in class the same day. I had difficulties getting all my thoughts down in the correct order with little time to brainstorm. All the same, my writing has brought me great opportunities. For example, I currently have an internship with a scholarship website, writing advice articles. The class has been enjoyable so far, and I am excited to see what it has to offer.

  1. We seem to have a lot in common in terms of our writing ability. I also had trouble with the timed writings in terms of brainstorming, and attempting to get all of my thoughts on paper in a way that was coherent and that made sense. Sometimes I had difficulty to decipher the older texts such as Shakespeare. However, I found those kinds of texts easier to understand, and if you wanted advice from me on how to understand them, I would be more than happy to give you some advice.

  2. Maybe it's not the writing skills you should be worried about so much. To me, you seem amazing at writing, much better than I am. However, I think you should improve upon your ability to interpret and analyze jargon from different time periods. You and I have a lot of common weaknesses, so maybe we could help each other out when we can. Anyways, I wish you the best of luck in your ambition to expand your horizons in writing!

  4. It's unfortunate that there's so much focus on timed essays in AP. I know that it's necessary to prepare you for the test, but it isn't good preparation for college, which puts more focus on the revision process.

I'd be interested to see some of your advice articles!
