I have often times made the assumption that my skill of writing, especially creative writing, fell years below the expected standards of writing. I deemed my pieces as "amateur", due to the lack of sophisticated language, failure to clearly explain my ideas, and incapability to organize my ideas. For some reason, I can never find the right words! It literally took me ten minutes to write the first two sentences. However, I am learning how not to be so critical of my writing skills. At least I can spell, kind of. I was told that reading books can increase my writing skills, which makes since to me. Unfortunately, I have the attention span of a gold fish. I can read an entire passage and not understand a single word I read because the entire time I’ll be thinking about what my mother will be cooking for dinner that night. Even though I am not that great of a writer, I have somewhat of a gift of critical thinking. I have the ability to analyze text in several different aspects. I can understand what the author is trying to suggest or promote, but I am also able to play the devil’s advocate by disagreeing with the obvious right answer. Now if only I could get my thoughts on paper!

  1. I feel you did a fairly well job in this one response. I can align myself wi you in the sense that I have a difficult time putting thoughts down on paper. If I could offer any pice of advise, it would revolve around your ability to critically think. Perhaps, when you are arguing a topic, take the time to write down two sentence to argue the point. Perhaps in notes.

  2. It is good that you have come to accept yourself as the writer that you are! You should never underestimate your abilities. As for your spelling and writing skills, they do come with reading other pieces of writing. And I know how you can get distracted for assigned readings (because I often do as well), but that does not have to be the extent of your reading experiences. You could pick up a fiction book in a genre that interests you, or get a non-fiction book to learn about a topic that interests you. You can apply your analyzing skills to these types of texts.

  3. Thoughts on the paper is hard. Writing is period. The challenge is getting your paper to both portray what you want to say and sound intellegent. I get lost on this quite frequently. I type hundreds of lines, it seems, before I get one right. I go through this on a daily basis. All I can say is keep trying!
