I have yet to select a college. What I am looking for in a
potential college for me to attend in the future is the location of the
university, possibilities for study abroad programs, types of classes and curriculum.
I do consider “making a living” the main reason for college because I don’t
know what I would like to do career-wise after high school. College could help
to narrow down my choices while preparing me for the future, although, as said
by Owen and Sawhill in Should Everyone Go
To College?, “a Bachelor’s degree is not a smart investment for every student
in every circumstance”. Other reasons college could be beneficial are that
college may provide a bit more structure as one leaves high school and it
presents opportunities to learn and meet new people. If I could have a high-paying
job without college education, I wouldn’t go to college unless I did not enjoy
this high-paying job, because, as said by Charles Murray in Are Too Many People Going to College?, “the
topic is no longer money but job satisfaction”.
I agree that going to college greatly depends on the circumstance of the individual. Some people go to college just for the experience, which I don’t believe is very beneficial especially if they are, in result of this, wasting money. When I first began searching for colleges to attend, I also focused on the study abroad program. I had my heart set on a college out of state (Denver University) where 75% of the students studied abroad. I ended up choosing TLU, for many reasons and they also have a study abroad program.

ReplyDeleteHopefully you find he college you are looking for. I am also considering the amount of money that I will be making out of college. I don't want to get a dead end degree and end up working a minimum wage job. This is why ended up choosing to major in BSN. Good luck in college.
